Model railroad engines, like all train engines, are the power infront (or behind) the train. The engine is able to pull all the fully loaded trains appropriately. With model railroad trains the engine size is dependent on the scale being used. The largest scale is the Live Steam engine which is a human rideable train. The most common size of scales are the O and HO scales.
Most model trains operate on low DC voltage with some exceptions such as the Lionel and Marklin brand engines.
