Model railroad Cabooses, like all train Cabooses are the end of the train. They use to signify then end of the train and were a way for everyone to know when the end of the train was coming.
The Caboose also was where the conductor (and employees) would rest, sleep and monitor the trains. The Caboose, however, is now a thing of the past as the caboose was a non-income generating part of the train. This made it difficult to encourage the train companies of the need of this part of the train.
Luckily the caboose is not a thing of the past in model railroad sets. In fact, many model railroad purists think that the caboose fills and important role. This being to model the trains as they were from that era.
