G Scale trains are one of the larger railroad modeling scales. It is often referred to as the indoor/outdoor model train because of it's size and durability. Because of this use people refer to the G Scale as the Garden Scale which is incorrect. It actually is from the German word groß (meaning "big").
The G Scale trains are typically used on a 45mm track this converts to a 1:22.5 ratio scale. However, in North America (United states) the G scale is typically called the 1:20.3 scale. This is because the narrow gauge of 3ft is used in the united states and the standard scale is used in Europe. In fact some train modellers and train producers call the 1:20.3 ratio the F Scale.
